COLUMNS

There were three types of columns to support their buildings: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian.

Doric was the earliest in those three types. It doesn't have base. It is really thick and majestic. Columns body have 20 grooves. There was no decoration on the top. Since it's strong, it has the male character on it.

The character of Ionic is the use of volutes. It's slender and it has beautiful shape. It has 24 grooves and a pair of downward scrolls at the head. It is known as the female columns.

The Corinthian order is the last developed of the three styles. It is more slender than the Ionic column, with a stigma decorated with Acanthus. The Corinthian is the most ornate of the orders.
